Services include writing news and features, sub-editing, training and a troubleshooting service to address issues of editorial quality or maximise reader impact.
Writing
I have experience of general news and feature writing and have particular expertise in the areas of mechanical and automotive engineering, technology, business and personal finance. I also have acquired an in-depth knowledge that enables me to write about type-one diabetes and related medical issues.
A former chief sub-editor on top trade publications The Engineer and Money Week, I am now freelance, with experience on titles ranging from Estates Times and Automotive Engineer to The Sunday Times and The Independent.
I have produced complete supplements and brochures on subjects ranging from personal finance to machine tools. This can, if required, include sourcing high-quality editorial material and pictures. If necessary on a particular project, I can create and manage an editorial team of experienced journalists and designers.
I am equally at home working on internet publications or sites, being an experienced web designer. My sub-editorial services can be employed on the content of existing websites that wish to stand out above most of the rest by delivering standards of writing akin to those of the national press.
I now work almost exclusively from home in Purley, Surrey, from where I offer page design, subbing and production services, using Apple Mac (though I can usually cope with Windows-based material too).
At present I work for a list of clients whose requirements range from copy and layout subbing to complete editorial solutions – delivery of camera-ready pages from raw copy.
I offer tailor-made seminars or training sessions in various aspects of journalism, ranging from a beginners guide to news or feature writing and editing, to advanced sub-editing skills.
Training and support can also take the form of individual mentoring, on or off-site, where a particular writer or sub-editor would benefit from the guidance of an experienced journalist.
This confidence and skill-building exercise can be particularly useful for those in small publications, where the ability to learn from proximity to more senior journalists may be limited.
Troubleshooting
Worried that you can't seem to get consistent high editorial quality on your magazine? Or do you simply want to enhance your credibility by raising quality?
With experience in some of the country's top magazine publishing houses, I can analyse your publication and give detailed advice on what's working well and what's hurting your effectiveness.
I can then help put things right, with anything from a one-day session alongside your team to regular hands-on visits and advice at the end of the phone.
Whatever your concern, if your publication isn't delivering its full editorial potential, I can help.
